It's easy to ride the Sky Capsule and never realise you're travelling a piece of railway history. The whole Blue Line Park runs along the corridor of the Donghae Nambu line, a coastal railway that for decades carried real trains along Busan's east shore. When the line was rerouted inland, this scenic seaside stretch was left behind — and rather than tear up the track, Busan reinvented it as the ride you take today.
From trains to pods
The reinvention is what makes the park unusual. The old rail corridor now carries two things at once: the ground-level Beach Train, which runs along the original alignment right at the shoreline, and the elevated Sky Capsule, whose track was built above it so the pastel pods glide over the sea while the train runs beneath. Two rides, one railway, layered along the same two kilometres of coast — a genuinely clever piece of adaptive reuse.
Why it feels the way it does
Knowing the history explains a lot about the experience. The gentle, dawdling pace, the way the track hugs the cliffs and beaches, the string of stations at old railway points like Mipo, Cheongsapo and Songjeong — all of it follows the logic of a coastal railway rather than a purpose-built attraction. You're riding the sea view the original engineers chose, which is part of why it's so consistently, effortlessly scenic.
A model worth knowing
The Blue Line Park has become a template other cities study: a disused rail line turned into a low-impact, high-charm tourist ride that preserves public access to a beautiful coast. For the visitor, none of that is required knowledge — the pods are pretty and the view is the view. But it adds a small satisfying layer to the ride to know that the lovely, slow glide over the sea is a hundred-year-old railway given a second, unexpected life.
